Vital pulpotomy and root canal therapy are two procedures that can be performed for the treatment of endodontically diseased teeth. Appropriate diagnosis of suitable cases, when to recommend either procedure, knowledge of how the procedures are performed and providing appropriate follow up instructions are important in communicating with clients who are committed to preserving their pet’s teeth.

Knowledge of dental anatomy and specific tooth pathology determines whether vital pulp therapy is a viable option or if root canal therapy is a more appropriate treatment option. Vital pulp therapy aims to preserve the pulp such that the tooth remains vital throughout the animal’s lifetime. Younger animals with malocclusions or fresh fractures often benefit from vital pulp therapy due to the size of the pulp chamber within the teeth. Root canal therapy involves the removal of diseased and infected pulpal tissue from the pulp chamber and placement of a filler material, and is the treatment of choice in such circumstances as tooth fractures that are of long or unknown duration, and cases with irreversible pulpitis and pulpal death.

An overview of these two endodontic treatment options will be discussed, as well as the various materials and techniques used, and follow up recommendations.
